Second Meeting of the Withdrawal Agreement Joint Committee

The Joint Committee on Withdrawal Agreements met for the second time by videoconference on 12 June. The Committee took stock of the meetings of the Technical Committee that have taken place since the first meeting of the Joint Committee on the Withdrawal Agreement and was kept informed of the implementation of the Withdrawal Agreement in general, where both parties have made good progress. The United Kingdom reaffirmed its commitment to fully protect the Belfast Agreement (Good Friday Agreement) and to meet its obligations under the Northern Ireland Protocol. The UK underlined its commitment to EU citizens in the UK and ensured that their rights are protected under the Withdrawal Agreement. The United Kingdom took the opportunity of this second meeting to highlight the United Kingdom`s decision not to extend the transition period. There will be no further opportunities to extend the transition period. The Uk will regain its economic and political independence on 1 January 2021 at the end of the transition period and will respond to a central demand of the British people. The second meeting of the EU-UK Joint Committee under the Withdrawal Agreement was held by videoconference on 12 June 2020. The fifth meeting of the EU-UK Joint Committee under the Withdrawal Agreement took place on Thursday 17 December 2020. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, the meeting took place in Brussels and by videoconference. The Committee was kept informed of the last meetings of the Technical Committee since the last meeting of the Joint Committee and of the implementation of the Withdrawal Agreement in general. The United Kingdom took the opportunity to highlight its Government`s decision to extend the transition period to the originally agreed date of 31 December 2020. The United Kingdom also stressed that there would be no other possibilities to extend the transition period. . The Joint Committee on the Withdrawal Agreement took the following decisions:. . . The Committee has taken a decision – the amendment of ten minor errors and omissions in the Withdrawal Agreement, which concern citizens` rights and the financial provisions necessary for legal certainty. The Vice-President of the European Commission, Maroš Šefčovič, and the British Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, the Right Honourable Michael Gove, in their capacity as co-chairs of the Joint Committee, launched the work of the Joint Committee and the specialised committees under the Withdrawal Agreement.
