Many Los Angeles County police departments use reserve officers — officers who perform law enforcement duties on a part-time basis. * Number of law enforcement personnel (as of 31 October 2019), submitted by the authorities. † Based on U.S. Census Bureau population estimates for 2019. In an unprecedented move by a California city, the City of Maywood dissolved nearly all of the city`s departments and services, including the Maywood Police Department, effective June 30, 2010. The City Council was forced to respond to the California Joint Powers Insurance Authority`s (JPIA) cancellation of the city`s workers` compensation and commercial insurance coverage because claims history was poor between 2005 and 2010. This history of negative claims included a series of costly lawsuits against the police department (it was reported that the department had hired officers who had been fired by other law enforcement agencies). After firing the police department, the city signed a contract with the Los Angeles County Sheriff`s Police Department. The Maywood Police Department had also signed a contract for the City of Cudahy for the police services after Cudahy terminated his contract with the Sheriff`s Department in 2003. With the dissolution of the Maywood Police Department, Cudahy was forced to resume his contract with the sheriff. It should be noted that, although not listed here, Los Angeles County`s public universities (UCLA and California State Universities in Los Angeles, Long Beach, Northridge, and Pomona) are all guarded by state university police officers. In 1997, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Police Department, which was responsible for policing for much of Los Angeles County`s public transportation, was dissolved and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority was assigned to the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff`s Department. Of the more than 300 police officers who worked for the MTA, 60 percent were later absorbed by the LAPD and the rest by the Sheriff`s Department.

The LAPD took over the police departments for transit lines in the city of Los Angeles and the Sheriff`s Department for MTA lines operating outside of Los Angeles. After a long and bitter relationship between the Compton City Council and the Compton Police Department, the council voted in July 2000 to dissolve the department and contract with the Los Angeles County Sheriff`s Police Department. The Council mentioned financial savings. Members of the ministry attributed this decision to a vendetta against the ministry. For cities not listed below, see Los Angeles County Sheriff`s Department. In 1995, the City of Hawaiian Gardens terminated its contract with the Los Angeles Sheriff`s Department to form the newest 20-officer Los Angeles County Police Department. A few years later, however, in the face of a budget crisis, the city council voted against local residents` objections to dissolving the department and reinstate a contract with the sheriff.

In 1990, the Azusa Police Department added a Chevrolet Camaro Z28 to its small fleet of patrol vehicles, the first Camaro to be delivered to a police department. The unconventional police vehicle reportedly escaped the city council as a discreet part of the police budget, but would have become popular in public despite initial concerns. All communities in Los Angeles County not listed above sign a contract with the Los Angeles County Sheriff`s Police Department, with the exception of the City of Santa Fe Springs. In 1995, Santa Fe Springs became the first municipality in Los Angeles County to sign a contract for police services with an adjacent city (City of Whittier). In 2003, Cudahy terminated his contract with the Los Angeles County Sheriff`s Department and signed a contract with the neighboring Maywood Police Department for the police department. However, this contract was terminated when the Maywood Department was later dissolved (see next paragraph), forcing Cudahy to return to the Sheriff`s Department. .
